Health Disparities Receives Special Hope Grant
This month our Health Disparities program will begin an exciting new project to develop a disabilities and cultural competency curriculum to improve healthcare for Spanish-speaking people with IDD. In partnership with two Latino self-advocates, Ibero-American Action League and Strong Memorial Hospital Interpreter services, we will develop a training curriculum aimed at Spanish language interpreters and medical liaisons. This training will include and introduction to IDD and health disparities, cultural perspectives on disability for Latino populations, and special communication needs of patients with IDD. All SMH and Ibero interpreters will receive this training, and based on feedback provided by the interpreters, the training will be available as an online training product at the end of this project. We are excited to begin this important work!
