Perioperative

Perioperative Services encompasses the journey of the surgical patient from the presurgical optimization experience to the preoperative phase of care through the operative process ending with recovery in the post anesthesia care unit or recovery in the ambulatory center. Nursing care is provided during the perianesthesia and perioperative phases of care at a variety of URM locations.

Center for Perioperative Medicine (CPM)

The CPM clinic is comprised of a presurgical phone screening team of RN’s to evaluate the patient’s medical, surgical and social history and 15 private exam rooms, a phlebotomy station and an X-ray suite. The presurgical examination is performed by an Anesthesiologist or Nurse Practitioner along with the nursing team to assisting with presurgical evaluation and teaching. The focus of the CPM team is to optimize the patient’s health prior to surgery.

Strong Surgical Center (SSC)   44 cubicles and 12 private rooms

The Strong Surgical Center provides care to the adult ambulatory, same day 23 hour and same day admission patient. The team of nurses and technicians work collaboratively with colleagues of other disciplines such as surgeons, anesthesia providers, residents, nurse practitioners, social workers and physical therapists to navigate the patient through a safe surgical experience.  Patients having surgery at SMH are admitted through the SSC. Those patients having ambulatory surgical procedure will recover and be discharged in the SSC. Some patients requiring an overnight stay will be admitted to the 23 Hour unit located adjacent to the SSC. Both areas are staffed by the same group of nurses and technicians.

Post Anesthesia Care Unit (PACU)   31 cubicles

The PACU is a staff of nurses and technicians that enjoy working in a fast paced environment recovering the post-operative patient prior to admission to an inpatient unit or discharge from the SSC. The PACU team works collaboratively with surgeons, anesthesia providers, residents, along with members of other disciplines. Excellent communication skills, the ability to work independently plus prior PACU or ICU experience is preferred.

Pediatric Surgical Suite (PSS)   17 cubicles

The Pediatric Surgical Suite provides care to the ambulatory, same day 23 hour and same day admission patient. The PSS is a family oriented pediatric surgical center caring for the patient of various acuity and ages ranging from infants to teens. Patients are admitted and recovered in the PSS prior to discharge or admission to an inpatient unit. Pediatric experience is required. PACU, ICU or two years medical-surgical experience is preferred.

Pediatric Operating Room   6 Operating Rooms, 1 Cardiac Cath Lab, GI unit

Opening the fall of 2017 is a new Pediatric Surgical Center with the perianesthesia areas located adjacent to the operating room suite. This department will be located in the Golisano Children’s Hospital. The surgical and endoscopy units will be supported by a multidisciplinary team comprised of healthcare providers specializing in the care of the pediatric patient. Pediatric experience is required for the Nurse interested in the preoperative or postoperative care unit. New graduates are welcome to apply to the operating room and participate in the Nurse Residency Program.

Operating Room (OR) 30 rooms

The main OR is a Level I Trauma Center along with having a Stroke Program. The department consists of 30 operating rooms servicing a wide variety of surgical specialties ranging from general surgery, otolaryngology, orthopaedics, urology, cardiac, neurosurgery, vascular and thoracic, and transplant. There is a robotics team which use RNFA’s to assist in cases. Using a team approach to care, nursing staff are cohorted into specialty PODS. New graduates are welcome.

Operating Room Nurse Residency Program

Nursing Practice is now offering an exciting program to assist new nursing graduates interested in Operating Room (OR) Nursing achieves their career goals in a structured, dynamic, and nurturing environment while practicing at a Level 1 Trauma Center. The OR Nurse Residency Program is being offered to NYS licensed Registered Nurses after having graduated from an accredited nursing program. This 6-12 month program provides the Registered Nurse with the knowledge, and skills needed to transition from novice nurse to a competent advanced beginner in the clinical setting. 

Second Floor Surgical Center

The second floor surgery center focuses on the total perioperative experience from admission of the through discharge. There are 6 operating rooms along with admission and recovery bays to care for a specific population. This cohort of nurse cares for the patients undergoing gynecologic and ophthalmic procedures. The eye service has cornea, ocular plastics and retina specialties along with cataract surgery.

Sawgrass Ambulatory Surgery Center

The Sawgrass ASC is located off campus on Sawgrass Drive in Brighton. It is comprised of 10 operating rooms, 2 minor operating rooms and one colonoscopy suite. The focus at the surgery center is the care of the patient having an ambulatory surgical procedure. Surgical specialties include orthopaedics, otolaryngology, gynecology, general surgery, pediatric urology, and pediatric dental. Opportunities for nurses is caring for the patient during the preoperative and recovery phase of care, in the operating room during the perioperative phase of care or in the GI procedural area.

Strong West Ambulatory Surgery Center

Strong West is the ambulatory surgery center located in Brockport. There are three operating rooms, a GI endoscopy suite and a procedure room. Specialties include endoscopy, orthopaedics, podiatry, general surgery, ophthalmology and interventional radiology. The Strong West ASC not only serves the patient with surgical needs but also the patient requiring procedures with moderate sedation. Nursing at this site focuses on the care of the ambulatory patient with an emphasis on independent nursing practice.
