About the Program

students jumping

The Pediatric Dentistry Residency Program at the University of Rochester encompasses two years of pediatric dentistry training in a CODA-accredited certificate program open to US/Canadian trained dentists.  Training is both varied and broad. Both common and uncommon oral conditions are evaluated and treated on an ongoing basis so residents finishing the program are able to deliver superior specialized oral health care to all children and adolescents.

This is a truly combined program providing significant clinical experiences at Eastman Dental Center, community sites, and Golisano Children’s Hospital balanced with our didactic curriculum. Instruction in these didactic sessions is provided by our full- and part-time faculty, visiting professors, invited speakers from other disciplines, and residents themselves in a psychologically safe learning environment.

Our residency program accepts 6 candidates per year. We value diversity and varied backgrounds in our resident cohorts. Whether you have experience or are coming straight from dental school, you have something to offer and something to gain from the program!

Our Key Strengths

teaching

  • Our residents, who work together and with interprofessional teams to provide collaborative care to children in our region.
  • Our faculty, who are invested in supporting resident education and autonomy and who have a diverse range of interests and experiences.
  • The well-balanced education between our didactics program and extensive clinical experiences in the pediatric dentistry clinic, community sites, and hospital-based experiences which leads to graduates who are well-trained for independent practice in different settings.
  • The breadth and diversity of our patient population and available resident experiences.
  • The integrated social work support in helping residents understand barriers to care and advocate for our patients and community.
  • The opportunity for more individualized training during weekly development days during second year of residency. This time can be used to gain additional experience with: neurodevelopmental conditions through the LEND Fellowship, craniofacial conditions and nasoalveolar molding, community health and advocacy, and research in a topic of choice (just to name a few).
  • Resident involvement in key quality improvement efforts in our program. We value resident feedback and are continually striving for improvement.
  • We are leaders in digital learning, teledentistry, community health, interdisciplinary care, craniofacial care, and advocacy education.
  • The collaborative community approach in caring and advocating for the children of our region.
