Obstetric Topic: Labor

Article 1: Preterm Labor Associated with Cervical Length

In addition to the overarching course objectives, upon completion, the learner also will be able to:

  • Explain the role of cervical length measurement in screening for preterm birth.
  • Identify factors affecting prediction of preterm birth using cervical length measurement.
  • List evidence-based guidelines for application of cervical length measurement in different populations of pregnant women.
  • Interpret the fetal heart rate tracing. (Fetal monitoring participants only.)


Article 2: The Normalcy Paradox in Labor Management: Perspectives from Friedman through Today

In addition to the overarching course objectives, upon completion, the learner also will be able to:

  • Develop an understanding of the historical and current data used to determine expected cervical dilation rates for women in labor.
  • Differentiate descriptions of mean (average) from mean ± 2 standard deviations as it applies to labor assessment.
  • Identify contemporary descriptions of typical labor patterns.
  • Interpret the fetal heart rate tracing. (Fetal monitoring participants only.)


Gynecology topic: Fecal Incontinence

In addition to the overarching Gynecology Course objectives, upon completion, the learner also will be able to:

  • List anatomic and physiologic factors which help maintain continence. 
  • Define the degrees of fecal incontinence.
  • Identify the patient population at risk for developing fecal incontinence.
  • Discuss required assessment, and initial medical treatment of mild to moderate fecal incontinence.
  • Describe the variable surgical options available to patients that fail medical therapy.
