periFACTS OB/GYN Academy

Obstetric and Fetal Monitoring Course

AP courseThe periFACTS® Obstetric and Fetal Monitoring Course focuses on teaching fetal heart rate interpretation skills as well as providing up-to-date information on common obstetric issues.

Learning materials are presented to our participants on a monthly basis and consist of educational videos, engaging reading materials, and real-life clinical cases that include fetal heart rate tracings and test questions.

periFACTS® uses NICHD vocabulary, which encourages nurses and doctors to use the same language for fetal heart rate interpretation. Currently, nearly 12,000 obstetric care providers in approximately 500 institutions across the country and abroad participate in the program.

  • The Obstetric and Fetal Monitoring Course is based on a 12-month curriculum. Each month, obstetric nurse specialists and perinatologists at the University of Rochester Medical Center and a broad range of medical specialists who, in addition to their clinical duties, prepare and distribute the following:
    • Two articles devoted to a major obstetric topic
    • Educational periFACTS® Videos
    • Two clinical case studies with fetal heart rate tracings for interpretation that relate to the obstetric articles
    • One web-casted grand rounds lecture
    • Access to the Gynecology Course
    • Two Clinical Quandaries
    • One Menopause Minute
  • This course is offered exclusively online and is available anywhere Internet access is available.
  • Nurse participants have the opportunity to complete 24 clinical case studies each year. An average of 1.25 nursing contact hours are awarded upon successful completion of each article and related clinical case study in the Obstetric and Fetal Monitoring Course. An average of 1 nursing contact hours is awarded upon successful completion of each Gynecology Course module (article and review test).
  • Physicians, physician assistants, nurse practitioners, and midwives can earn up to 30 AMA PRA Category 1 credits per year for the Obstetric and Fetal Monitoring Course, and they can earn up to 12 AMA PRA Category 1 Credits per year for the Gynecology Course.
  • Clinically relevant articles and case studies, prepared by a broad range of experts, are posted on the first day of every month.
  • Participants read the articles and complete their tests and evaluations online. All test questions are in a multiple choice, true/false, multiple-answer, or matching format. Tests are corrected automatically and participants receive immediate feedback on their test results.
  • The periFACTS® Videos present short, educational videos that focus on fetal heart rate monitor interpretation, general obstetric, patient safety, and disease-related topics.
  • The University of Rochester's web-casted grand rounds are presented every month on topics pertaining to obstetrics, gynecology, endocrinology, oncology, and urogynecology.
  • The Clinical Quandaries address clinical or professional challenges that our participants currently are facing.
  • The Menopause Minute provides a short discussion regarding the aspects of menopause transition.
  • Yearly subscription rates are only $92.00 per nurse; $120.00 per physician assistant, nurse practitioner or midwife; and $150.00 per physician.
  • Each individual or group that enrolls receives our Fetal Heart Rate Monitoring: Pathophysiology and Practice textbook, a Subscribers' Manual, and an in-service CD (all included in the $50.00 one-time only start-up fee). Additional textbooks can be purchased online via the periFACTS® Store.
  • Each participating agency chooses their own on-site periFACTS® Coordinator. We recommend that you select someone who demonstrates leadership qualities and who has an established positive rapport with the obstetric staff. The individual selected to be the periFACTS®Coordinator at each site is extremely important to the success of the program, for this person will act as a resource for the staff and be the liaison between your organization and periFACTS®.
