Breakthroughs
The University of Rochester has been involved in the discovery and testing of many medical breakthroughs. Here are a few examples of advances that were made possible through clinical research here.
Carotid Stents
The build up of plaque in carotid arteries—the main arteries in your neck—can lead to a stroke. We are examining whether the risk of stroke can be reduced by implanting stents in the carotid artery through a minimally invasive procedure.
Blood Pressure Implant
Many people in America suffer from high blood pressure that cannot be effectively controlled with medications. We were the first site in the country to implant a device that holds the promise of lowering blood pressure without medication.
The MADIT Study
Through this groundbreaking study designed here, we helped establish the national guidelines for using implantable defibrillators to prevent sudden death in patients with heart failure.
HPV Vaccine
The human papilloma virus vaccine was developed in our vaccine program. It holds the promise of helping to eliminate cervical cancer in women around the world.
Preventing Brain Damage
When a person’s heart stops for more than a few minutes, brain damage often results. We are one of several sites across the country testing a technology that has prevented brain damage by cooling the bodies of patients who have suffered cardiac arrest.
