What is Enlarged Prostate?
An enlarged prostate, or benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH), is an enlargement of the prostate gland in older men. It affects approximately 50% of men over age 50, and up to 90% of men over 80.
This excess growth of tissue compresses and obstructs the urethra, reducing the flow of urine from the bladder and sometimes blocking it entirely. An enlarged prostate is one of the leading reasons people visit a urologist.
Symptoms of an Enlarged Prostate
- Need to urinate frequently both day and night
- Weak or slow stream
- Feeling that your bladder is not emptying completely
- A stream that starts and stops
- Urgency to urinate
- Difficult or slow start to urination
- Occasional loss of control of urine flow

UR Medicine's Treatments for Enlarged Prostate
Treatment options include behavioral modifications, medications, and surgery.
Another option is Rezūm, a transurethral RF thermal therapy that can be performed in a clinic or out-patient setting. UR Medicine Urology became the first in the region to offer this treatment. It uses a hand-held device to deliver radiofrequency-generated thermal therapy in the form of water vapor to the extra prostate tissue that is causing symptoms.
Rezūm is simple in-office/outpatient therapy. It doesn’t require general anesthesia, it preserves sexual and urinary functions, and it allows patients to return to regular activities within a few days.
