The Regional Perinatal Center (RPC) conducts an outreach visit at each affiliate hospital up to two times per year. These visits focus on maternal and neonatal transfers, hospital statistics, adverse perinatal outcomes, and selected topics of interest to the specific hospital. The outreach team consists of a perinatologist and perinatal nurse practitioner, and a neonatologist and a neonatal nurse practitioner. Visits last between one and three hours and are attended by the hospital’s obstetricians, pediatricians, family practitioners, nurses and quality assurance personnel. During these visits, discharge summaries and selected hospital records are reviewed, and areas in which the hospital would be considered an outlier relative to regional practices are discussed. The RPC may suggest directions for future QA/QI initiatives at an individual hospital, or make specific recommendations for practice changes to improve quality of care.
