The Epilepsy Surgery Program at URMC is integrated within the Strong Epilepsy Center and offers the regions most advanced and comprehensive care from diagnosis to treatment of patients with seizures and epilepsy.
Why Choose URMC Neurosurgery?
The Epilepsy Treatment program was established in 1989, and for the last 13 years has cared for thousands of patients including:
Intractable epilepsy – difficult to treat seizures
Seizures due to tumors etc.
Our team’s breadth of experience in both medical and surgical treatment and URMC’s patient centered comprehensive care model makes our program unique in the region.
The Epilepsy Treatment program at URMC provides the most advanced testing for both the diagnosis of seizures and evaluation for epilepsy surgery – an opportunity for cure of an often lifelong disorder.
The program also has its own Long Term Video EEG monitoring lab located at Strong Memorial hospital where patient’s seizures can be recorded in a safe & controlled environment.
Our program’s well funded research division with an active clinical trials program is able to offer cutting edge emerging treatments for complex epilepsy patients.
Our multidisciplinary team focuses on providing assistance to patients and families with the psychological and social issues that arise with the diagnosis of epilepsy - an area often ignored by others.
Our experienced multidisciplinary team includes Neurologists, Neurosurgeons, Psychologists, Psychiatrists, Neurophysiologists, Nutritionists and Social workers who bring with them decades of experience and a model of care that truly provides medicine of the highest order and the best possible outcomes (link to outcomes) for patients with seizures and epilepsy.
Most patients are seen for an initial visit in our clinic. A diagnostic evaluation may be planned which can include MRI, EEG or an admission to Strong Memorial Hospital for Long Term, Video-EEG Monitoring where a patient’s seizures can be recorded. Recommendations may be made for future management, and patients may be followed at the center or by their referring neurologist. Both medical and surgical options are explored, and if a patient is felt to be a surgical candidate, additional evaluation may take place.
Patients are frequently seen by our psychosocial team. This team consists of specialists in Psychiatry and Psychology who can assist in managing many of the social and psychological issues that arise with the diagnosis of epilepsy.
