How Peri-FACTS Works

Peri-FACTS presents a new topic every month. During the course of the year, 12 different topic areas are covered. Each month, obstetric nurse specialists and perinatologists at the University of Rochester Medical Center who, in addition to their clinical duties, prepare and distribute the following:

Two Educational Videos

Produced by our staff and filmed in our Peri-FACTS studio in Rochester, NY, these short, educational videos focus on a variety of topics, such as basic fetal heart rate interpretation, strip reviews of fetal heart rate tracings, general obstetric topics, patient safety topics (i.e., hand hygiene, universal precautions), and disease-related topics (i.e., twin-to-twin transfusion syndrome.)

Program materials open on the first day of the month and close on the last day of the month. Participants have one month to complete each month's course materials--reading the articles, interpreting the fetal heart rate tracings, answering the clinical case study questions, and submitting their answers online or to their on-site Peri-FACTS Coordinator. Answers to the clinical case studies are available after the last day of the month.

Choosing a Coordinator

Each participating agency chooses their own on-site Peri-FACTS Coordinator. We recommend that you select a registered nurse who demonstrates leadership qualities and who has an established positive rapport with the obstetric nursing staff. The individual selected to be the Peri-FACTS Coordinator at each site is extremely important to the success of the program, for this person will act as a resource for the staff and be the liaison between your organization and Peri-FACTS . Along with facilitating and encouraging staff participation, this person will be responsible for making the weekly transmissions available, grading the clinical case studies, and reporting the scores to our office.
