Areas of Excellence - Anatomic Pathology

In addition to our main clinical lab, URMC Labs offers numerous Laboratory Areas of Excellence. These are labs within the URMC system that offer specialized tests and services.

Each of these Laboratory Areas of Excellence offers its own expert consultants to work with you to better understand and apply the unique tests offered by that lab.

For more information on any of these labs and the tests they offer, please call or email the contact person listed with that lab.

Anatomic Pathology Services

Anatomic Pathology services include cytopathology, hematopathology, neuropathology, and surgical pathology. Pathologists in the URMC Labs review more than 40,000 surgical specimens and 80,000 cytopathology specimens per year. Active autopsy service with over 340 cases per year.

Of special interest: Cases sent for consultation in neuropathology, cytopathology, and renal/transplant pathology can be discussed with telephone voice connection supplemented by real-time Internet video transmission of microscope images.

Of special interest to patients: Fine needle aspiration biopsies in cytopathology and the neuromuscular lab, offer a less-invasive alternative to traditional biopsy.

Immunohistochemistry Laboratory

Provides clinical testing on surgical specimens for proteins, enzymes, and infectious materials by immunohistochemical methods.  We offer immunocytochemical and in-situ staining to outside clients with interpretation by our pathologist or with return for interpretation to the sending pathologist.

Of special interest: Our unit provides the university community with extensive knowledge on immunocytochemical testing in both clinical and research settings. Most clinical testing is performed within 24 hours giving rapid results to the pathologists for final diagnosis. Following the latest CAP guidelines, we provide testing which supports treatment planning by the clinician and the patient. Some examples would be Estrogen and Progesterone Receptors, Her2-neu protein expression, EGFR and CKit testing.
