Case 2: Submandibular Neck FNA

Sorry, this was not a case of malignant melanoma.

Melanoma may and commonly does show a discohesive cell pattern similar to lymphoma (slides 1 & 2). Most individual cells have prominent nucleoli (slides 3 & 4). Intranuclear pseudoinclusions may be seen. One of the most helpful features is the presence of melanin seen as small dark granules within the cytoplasm and in surrounding histiocytes (all slides). In amelanotic cases, the diagnosis is more difficult. IHC analysis for S-100 and HMB4S may be helpful.
