On-Site Practicums

The laboratories accept cytotechnology students from area colleges and universities for on-site practical training. The advantages of this experience include:

  • Opportunity to examine a broad range of abnormal specimens, including current cases and extensive teaching sets
  • Opportunity to review large volumes of liquid based PAP smears (SurePath at Rochester General Hospital and ThinPrep and SurePath at Strong Memorial Hospital)
  • Introduction to the management of large case volumes
  • Experience with newer technologies including Cytyc Imaging System
  • Introduction to molecular diagnostics and other ancillary techniques including HPV testing, immunocytochemistry, FISH, CISH, and histochemical stains

Student may arrange time in Rochester through the following programs:

The Stanley F. Patten Fellowship in Cytopathology

This one-year, ACGME-accredited, program offers advanced training in diagnostic cytopathology, including application of ancillary techniques such as immunocytochemistry, flow cytometry, molecular diagnostics and electron microscopy to cytologic specimens. Considerable emphasis is placed on correlations between cytopathologic and surgical pathologic diagnoses. Fellows learn to perform superficial FNAs. They also participate in interdepartmental conferences and in teaching residents and medical students. This fellowship is based primarily at Strong Memorial Hospital with an opportunity to rotate to Rochester General Hospital. Applicants should be Board eligible or certified in anatomic pathology or AP/CP.

Lectures and Presentations

Consortium faculty are regular speakers at local and national meetings. Their lecture and workshop topics include gynecologic cytopathology, liquid-based workshops in gynecologic and glandular lesions, body cavity fluids, breast fine needle aspirates, head and neck cytopathology, and urinary cytopathology.

Please contact Dr. Thomas Bonfiglio (Tom_Bonfiglio@urmc.rochester.edu) or Dr. Dawn Riedy (Dawn.Riedy@ViaHealth.org) if you are interested in arranging a lecture or workshop on these or other topics.
