Dr. Ryan's clinical interests include general surgical pathology and frozen section signout with a developed expertise in GI and hepatic pathology. In addition, Dr. Ryan participates in both adult and pediatric GI pathology working conferences for clinicians. The liver transplant division has become one of the largest in the country with over 200 patients transplanted in 2006 and Dr. Ryan is responsible for diagnosing the great majority of transplant liver biopsies. She has also received training in reading heart transplant biopsies.

Qualifications

M.D., The Johns Hopkins School of Medicine 1975
Residency, Pathology, University of Rochester, 1975-81

Research Overview

Dr. Ryan's research endeavors with the liver transplant program include evaluation of pretransplant biopsies in live liver donor candidates, interpretation of post transplant biopsies in Hepatitis C patients and the result of tolerance induction on the development of graft-versus-host disease. Additional current projects involve the association of tissue factor (TF) with VEGF expression in colorectal, pancreatic and gastric carcinomas, suggesting a link between hemostatic activation and angiogenesis. Past studies included EGFR and VEGF expression and mutated K12-ras as indicators of survival in colon cancer. Another field of investigation concerns amino acid transport mechanisms (system B) in animals after massive enterectomy and the effect of growth factors in its regulation.
