Research Overview

My research is the study of the molecular mechanisms by which TNF mediate the formation, activation and survival of osteoclasts in inflammation induced bone. Recently, we are focused on testing the following hypotheses. 1) TNF stimulates stem cells to become osteoclast precursors and 2) TNF prolongs survival of osteoclasts. Thus, TNF increases the total number of osteoclasts at any given time, which leads to bone destruction. The results from these studies will provide preclinic informations with regard to TNF-mediated inflammatory bone loss. We believe that these could eventually be useful for developing agents that inhibit bone resorption in patients with diseases associated with increased bone loss due to increased osteoclast activity.
