The Esophageal Diagnostic Lab (Motility) provides comprehensive care to the adult inpatient and outpatient populations. Services are provided to patients within the Thoracic/ Foregut service who experience esophageal and bronchial disorders. The program provides consultation, diagnosis, treatment and research. Procedures performed include upper endoscopies, bronchoscopies, high resolution manometries, pH monitoring, stricture dilation and ablation of esophageal dysplasia.

Ambulatory Medicine consists of a General Medicine Faculty group and the Internal Medicine Resident practice. The group provides primary care and comprehensive outpatient care to adults over the age of 18 including the geriatric population. The multidisciplinary team includes physicians, nurse practitioners, registered nurses, clinical technicians, a social worker and a dietitian. Team members provide care for chronic disease management, health maintenance and acute episodic care.

Ambulatory Pediatrics provides comprehensive outpatient services to children, teens and young adults. Well child care, chronic disease management and acute care are provided using a holistic approach. There are three distinct areas of service including the Strong Pediatric Practice that provides Primary Care to children 0-21 years of age. Specialty Care including Neurology, Gastroenterology, Kirch Developmental Disabilities Clinic, Hematology/Oncology, General surgery, Cranio-Facial Plastic Surgery, HIV/Infectious disease, Nephrology, Neurosurgery, Rheumatology, Teen/Tot clinic, Pulmonary, Endocrinology, Adolescent Medicine, Urology, Genetics, and NICU continuing care clinic. The Pediatric Treatment Center provides infusion services & procedural support to patients from all Pediatric Specialty Practices. The mission of Women’s Health Practice is to provide high quality comprehensive women’s healthcare and education in a collaborative environment. Allergy, Immunology, and Rheumatology provides medical care to patients with musculoskeletal, autoimmune and allergic diseases. Full diagnostic services for skin testing, respiratory diseases and pulmonary function are provided for children and adults with allergic illness including injection immunotherapy. Adult Rheumatology services include comprehensive consultation, administration of IV medications for the treatment of systemic arthritis, diagnosis and treatment for a variety of rheumatic diseases including rheumatoid arthritis, systemic lupus erythematous, psoriatic arthritis, and others.

The Strong Heart Wellness and Prevention Program is a fully comprehensive preventive cardiology program that offers services to adults. Cardiac Rehabilitation is a Phase I, II, and III monitored exercise and educational program for patients from 18 – 90+ years who have had a recent cardiac event or are at risk for developing heart disease and want to improve their heart health. Lifestyle modification through changes in dietary habits and exercise is emphasized. The atmosphere is professional yet extremely friendly and is safe for any fitness level. There is a Hypertension Clinic, Lipid Disorder clinic and Polycystic Ovary Syndrome clinic in the area.

Digestive Disease and Hepatology

This area services the adult inpatient and outpatient population for the surrounding area with basic diagnostic and advanced therapeutic techniques including upper and lower endoscopy. Specialties include endoscopic ultrasound, stricture dilation, tattooing, polypectomy, ablation of dysplasia, and multiple modalities for control of GI bleeding. The biliary specialists perform endoscopicretrograde cholangiopancreatography which includes sphincterotomy, cholangioscopy, lithotripsy plus biliary and pancreatic stents for primary biliary problems and pancreatic management. Hepatology patients are seen for management of liver disease pre and post transplant. The unit also has a fully equipped motility lab offering upper and lower motility testing, biofeedback, and hydrogen breath tests.

The Outpatient Orthopaedic Department provides a full range of services including Sports Medicine, Spine Center, Osteoporosis Center, Trauma, Total Joint Replacement, Pediatrics, Oncology, Foot/Ankle, Shoulder/Elbow, Hand/Wrist, Plastics/Micro surgery, General Orthopaedics and an Urgent Care program. Patients range in age from infant to geriatric. Procedure performed include surgical procedures of the hand, minor plastic surgeries and spinal injections. Imaging Science provides for radiologic needs of patients in the area.

The Pulmonary Lab services adult patients over the age of 18. Patients are seen with a variety of pulmonary diagnoses including COPD, Asthma, Lung Cancer, Sarcoidosis, Interstitial Lung Disease, Pneumonia and other respiratory related illnesses. The lab performs all aspects of pulmonary function testing (PFT’s). The lab also performs bronchoscopy and uses the most advanced ultrasound technology (EBUS). Expansion of the program space will occur in early 2009.

Strong Cardiology Associates and the Women’s Heart Program at the Strong Heart and Vascular Center offers comprehensive outpatient cardiology services for patients from 18 – 90+ years who have known or suspected coronary artery disease, post cardiac events, hypertension, and hyperlipidemia. Early detection, preventative strategies and education to promote a healthy life style are emphasized. Services include echo cardiology; nuclear cardiology including stress and pharmacological stress testing, echocardiography including stress and pharmacological stress testing, arrhythmia monitoring and event (loop) monitoring.

Clinical Cardiology sees adult patients with a variety of cardiac diagnoses including angina, valvular abnormalities, myocardial infarction, heart failure, hypertension, dyslipidemia, post angioplasty, post CABG, and post valve repair and/or replacement. Services are provided to adult and pediatric patients with cardiac rhythm disturbances. Procedures done include routine ETT’s,holter monitors, single average ECGs, and event recording. Thoracenteses are performed as needed, and Pacemaker and ICD patients are monitored monthly or quarterly.

Nuclear cardiology performs exercise and pharmacologic induced stress tests and routine and first pass MUGA scans on the adult population. Emergency and Observation patients with 1 negative Troponin have resting images and if these images are within normal limits are stressed. Those patients are conclusively ruled out for an MI and are discharged to home the same day.

Echocardiology

Echo performs exercise and pharmacologic induced stress tests and transthoracic and transesophageal echocardiograms on the adult population. Mobile echos are done throughout the hospital and there are several offsites where both mobile echos and stress testing are performed.

Infectious Disease Clinic

The Adult Infectious Diseases Clinic is a NYS Designated AIDS Center providing comprehensive and innovative treatment to patients diagnosed with HIV/AIDS. The clinic provides the HIV/AIDS patients with availability to one of only 51 sites in the United States and 76 worldwide to participate in drug trials as part of the AIDS Clinical Trial Group Network, (ACTG). In addition, the clinic also provides specialized care to people with various infectious diseases from around the world. This includes, continuity of care for patients being treated with long term IV antibiotic therapies after hospital discharge, including dosage control, and consults for both, pre and post, organ transplant recipients. The program is set to expand early 2009.

The Children’s Heart Center provides cardiac and cardiovascular surgical care for children and adults born with heart disease or children who acquire heart problems. The Fetal Monitoring Lab (FML) is staffed with six nurses all of whom are certified in advanced fetal monitoring. SCC and FML work closely together along with the perinatologist, ultrasound staff and residents to deliver optimal care to our patients.

The Dental and Oral-Maxillo Facial Service sees patients from pediatric through geriatric ages, inpatients and out patients, including the developmentally disabled and medically compromised. Patients are seen for a full range of dental services from palliative care to emergency dental and/or facial trauma. The RN is assigned to all patients requiring monitoring, IV sedation, IV medications and inpatient consultations.

Pain Treatment Center

In 2009 the Pain Treatment Center will relocate to an expanded area in a new building offsite from the main campus. There will be two procedure rooms and eight clinic rooms in this new space.

The Pain Treatment Center is a consultative practice that addresses a variety of pain management issues including chronic and cancer pain management, as well as emergency room issues and pre-emptive pain control for surgery. The multidisciplinary approach includes medical, procedural, and behavioral therapies along with referrals for alternative modalities such as acupuncture, physical therapy, and aqua therapy. Staff manage intrathecal pumps and physicians perform a wide variety of procedures including trigger point injections, joint injections, epidural steroid injections, sympathetic blocks, neurolytic blocks,radio frequency ablations, and spinal cord stimulators. Patients are adolescent through advanced age.

The Eye Institute provides comprehensive and specialty ophthalmic care. Patients range in age from neonate through the elderly. The Department of Imaging Sciences at Strong Memorial Hospital includes the modalities of CAT Scan, Magnetic Resonance Imaging, Ultrasound, Angio/Interventional (both body and neurology services), Nuclear Medicine, and Diagnostic Imaging. The department sees patients across the life span from neonate to geriatric, whether they be in-patients, out-patients, or Emergency Department patients. The Neuro interventional suite is used to treat the immediate stroke patient with advanced technologies/procedures. The four body/interventional suites are used to perform diagnostic angiograms, as well as interventional procedures for patients of all ages. The Anesthesia Care Unit provides pre and post anesthesia care to patients undergoing CT scans and/or MRIs under anesthesia. Two Recovery Areas are staffed by RNs who prepare outpatients for their invasive procedures and monitor them post procedure, readying the patient for discharge home. The RNs in the Angio/Interventional modality monitor patients who are moderately sedated to patients undergoing invasive procedures.

Skin testing for allergy evaluations, pulmonary function testing to evaluate lung disease and the only Pulmonary Hypertension Program in Upstate New York, are at one convenient, out-patient setting.

Occupational and Environmental Medicine

OEM provides contractual services to businesses in the surrounding area. These services include pre-employment history and physical exams, drug and alcohol testing, fitness for work testing, injury care, etc. SMH employees complete pre-employment screens and annual health updates through this program. Blood borne pathogen education is provided to companies at their request. Flu vaccine, Hepatitis B or other medication may be administered to employees at their work site by the nurses in OEM as requested by their organization.

Nursing staff support patients through telephone management and patient education, focused on pre-operative education.

The Strong Fertility Center offers reproductive endocrinology care as well as fertility treatment. A complete range of fertility treatments are offered from medication and surgery through IVF, ICSI, PGD and sterilization reversal. The Strong Fertility Center also has Donor Egg and Sperm Programs. Support groups, counseling and the option to work with complimentary therapies are also available to patients. The mission of Strong Fertility Center is to improve reproductive health through patient care, research, teaching and community outreach.
