Department Accepted as Math Alliance Graduate Program Group

Drs. Sally Thurston, David Oakes, and Michael McDermott are mentors for the National Alliance for Doctoral Studies in the Mathematical Sciences (the “Math Alliance”), an NSF-funded community of mathematical sciences faculty and students.

Founded in 2001, one goal of the Math Alliance is to "be sure that every underrepresented or underserved American student with the talent and the ambition has the opportunity to earn a doctoral degree in a mathematical science."

Drs. Thurston, Oakes, and McDermott applied to become a Graduate Program Group, which is a group of Math Alliance graduate faculty in a mathematical sciences department of sufficient size and seniority to be able to mentor many underrepresented minority graduate students, and who have committed themselves to a set of best practices. Their application was accepted in October 2015.
