Ask a Medical Librarian

Ask A Medical Librarian

You have just been diagnosed with cancer – and you are scared. You do not remember much of what your provider told you about the type of cancer that you have or the treatment. Or, maybe you were diagnosed earlier and have some information, but now you are ready for more. The Ask a Medical Librarian Service (AAML) offered by the Edward G. Miner Library at the University of Rochester Medical Center will provide you with the information that you need whenever you need it.

Initiating A Request

The process is simple:

  1. Print out the AAML Overview and give it to your physician, resident, fellow, nurse, nurse practitioner, or social worker to be sure that they are aware of the service. Request that one of the above providers complete and submit an Information Prescription (IP) so that you can obtain the information that you need.
  2. Submit the IP using either of the options below:
    • Your physician, resident, fellow, nurse, nurse practitioner, or social worker can complete the online form and submit it electronically.
    • You can print out the above form and ask any of the above providers to complete it and fax it to Miner Library using the fax number at the top of the form.
  3. Once Miner librarians receive the electronically submitted or faxed IP, we will contact you inperson (if you are an inpatient) or via phone or email (if you are an outpatient) and followup with information. Of course, you are also invited to use Miner Library’s onsite collections and services.

Availability

This service is available to the cancer patients and their families whose physician, resident, fellow, nurse, nurse practitioner, or social worker is affiliated with the University of Rochester Medical Center (URMC), including Strong Memorial Hospital, Wilmot Cancer Center, Highland Hospital, or outpatient physician offices. If you’re unsure of their affiliation, just ask – they’ll know.

If your physician, resident, fellow, nurse, nurse practitioner, or social worker is not affiliated with any of the above entities, you are invited to use Miner Library’s onsite collections and services.
