Through Your Will or planned gift

For those who are age 70½ or older, The Pension Protection Act of 2006 allows donors to make annual tax-free distributions from a traditional or Roth IRA for as much as $100,000 when donated directly to one or more charities. Since IRA assets are pre-tax, there is no charitable income tax deduction available in these cases. Also, only outright gifts (not life income gifts) qualify for the IRA Charitable Rollover. This unique opportunity will expire on Dec. 31 unless extended by the Congress.

Perhaps a charitable gift annuity would meet your needs, too. Here are some of the benefits:

  • Charitable gift annuities return guaranteed income to the annuitant(s) for life.
  • Funding with cash generates significant tax-free income.
  • Funding with appreciated securities avoids capital-gain taxes.
  • At the passing of the last annuitant, the remaining funds pass to the Wilmot Cancer Institute for a purpose of the donor’s choosing.

For more information, please contact the Office of Trusts and Estates, at (800) 635-4672, (585) 273-5904, or kreckel@alumni.rochester.edu. Also, we invite you to visit our planned giving Web site, at www.rochester.plannedgifts.org
