What is Physical Performance?

UR Medicine provides area high schools and professional athletic teams with comprehensive care that starts on the playing field. Our staff of physicians, certified athletic trainers, physical therapists, physician assistants (PAs) and nurse practitioners (NPs) provide the latest in medical and surgical care.

We offer a variety of programs and services to help you stay on top of your game by preventing, evaluating, treating, and rehabilitating injuries. Our approach to recovery and reintegration into sports is comprehensive, involving the development of personalized "return to play" strategies for each athlete. This approach balances the need for recovery with the athlete's desire to return to competition safely and at peak performance levels.

What to Expect from the Physical Performance (Fitness Science)

We start with a performance assessment to capture data that allows us to build your physical performance profile.

Then we match you with a performance expert to customize a program for you, which includes strength and conditioning training, sports psychology, and sports nutrition.

As your training continues, so will the process of tracking progress, setting personal goals, and analyzing results.

Our trainers work closely with sports medicine physicians, researchers, and physical therapists, as well as our certified nutritionist Holly Gilligan and Sport Psychologist Craig Cypher; that collaboration increases everyone’s expertise, and the benefits carry over to the athletes we work with.

Evidence-based programs and a medically informed approach to strength and conditioning training are what set us apart from other trainers. We gather data on athletes’ performance at baseline and after weeks or months of training at a very detailed level. We home in on key metrics for specific sports, and build databases by type of sport and athlete – from junior and senior high school teams all the way up to division 1, division 3, etc. This gives us an ability to see where everyone stacks up – that’s valuable feedback for us, and for the athletes and their coaches. The results we’re seeing in athletes are phenomenal – key performance indicators in acceleration, top speed, agility, power go up by 60 percent for many of our clients.

We can do injury analysis for athletes and groups here at CHAMPP, but now we also go out to schools we work with for performance evaluation and data analysis of entire teams. We bring specialized equipment including force plates to test squatting, jumping, change of direction, and balance, plus a timing laser to get precise measures on athletes’ speed and movement patterns.  These tests give us a read on each athlete’s starting point from a performance perspective as well as their injury risk, so we can make recommendations on how they can train to reduce those risks while enhancing their performance. These combines give us an efficient, quick screening of many athletes at once, and we get a lot of valuable data that yields benefits over time.

We have a wide range of teams and individuals we work with, from youth sports athletes as young as 8 or 9, to middle- and high school athletes and their teams, plus collegiate and professional sports teams. Our training system is dynamic and flexible to adapt to each individual or team’s age range, sport, and goals.

Teams can use training here at CHAMPP to help build their culture – training as a group in preparation for practices and games is definitely an enriching experience that delivers results. Individual athletes come to us for a variety of reasons – they may be recovering from an injury and want to prevent it from recurring; or proactively looking to reduce their injury risk; or they just want to work on improving their performance through strength and movement training. We’re happy to work with everyone and tailor their experience to their goals and their needs.

As we’ve expanded our menu of services, we have also updated our pricing to make it more market-competitive and more accessible to clients. Our mission is to provide our approach in as many places as we can, and this year we have adapted our pricing accordingly. We have bundled offers that combine performance training for teams to complement the onsite athletic trainer service we have always offered schools. We are excited about the academic sports year ahead and eager to keep delivering added value for athletes and their teams.

We can help patients restore AND enhance function: whether they are recovering from injury or managing a chronic disease, or want to improve their fitness and maximize their physical performance.

Our Saunders Center for Orthopaedics & Physical Performance, located at Marketplace Mall, combines the latest in care, research and education under one roof to create a center unlike any other in the Northeast.

What Sets Us Apart?

As part of an academic medical center, we bring scientific and clinical expertise to our programs.

That includes a science-based approach that keeps you on track with measurable progress. Our expertise means we’re able to offer sport-specific clinics, such as a multidisciplinary runners’ clinic run by a physician, physical therapist, and performance trainer. They offer specialized care to runners of all ages and skill sets, using technology such as a zero-gravity treadmill for rehabilitation.

Our performance team includes certified athletic trainers, physical therapists, dietitians, pain management specialists, psychologists, and orthopaedic physicians.

No matter what your goals are, we have the experience and knowledge to create a specific program based on your particular needs—safely and effectively.
