Periodontology Courses

Advanced concepts in Periodontology related to: anatomy and physiology, bone biology, diagnosis and classification, development, etiology, microbiology, pathogenesis, wound healing, therapy, immunology, occlusion and the periodontium, regeneration techniques, periodontal plastic surgery, prevention and study design.

Topics relating to clinical periodontics, specifically diagnosis, therapy, and supportive periodontal therapy; and, the interrelationship of endodontics, orthodontics and prosthodontics with periodontics.
Clinical demonstrations are given to familiarize the residents with specific techniques. Each demonstration is succeeded and followed by a brief seminar outlining indications and contraindications.

Review and discuss the rationale and techniques for Advanced Periodontal and Implant Surgery.

Contemporary information in endodontology and familiarity with clinical aspects of endodontics related to: pulp biology, root anatomy, periodontal - pulpal disease signs (symptoms), diagnosis, access for endodontic treatment, pulp extirpation, temporary restorations, apicoectomy, apical preparation, and apical sealing.

Biological principles of guided tissue regeneration, clinical applications for guided tissue regeneration, different materials used for barriers, and how to apply the different types of barriers.

Anatomy and function of the sinus cavity
Sinus diagnostic techniques (endoscopy)
Physiology and microbiology of the sinus
Radiological techniques of the sinus
Diagnostic and management of oro-antral communications
Pathology of the sinus (sinusitis, cystic lesions, tumors), sinus lift procedures, sinus grafting
Success rate of implants placed in the sinus
Complications from the sinus cavity and their management.

Theoretical and practical experience in the application of pain controlling agents
Discuss and demonstrate the administration of nitrous oxide inhalation analgesia and diazepam
Review of basic pharmacology and potential application of other sedative analgesics
Discussion of local anesthetics.

Indications and contraindications for dental implants of various designs and characteristics
Prosthetic requirements of dental implants
Pre-surgical examination and treatment planning for the use of dental implants
Surgical placement of dental implants
Evaluation of peri-implant tissues and the management of implant complications
Maintenance of dental implants
Appropriate sterile and aseptic techniques for placement of dental implants
Guided bone regeneration, sinus elevation procedures, and augmentation bone grafts.

Comprehensive review of the dental implant literature.
Lectures include didactic material (factors which influence the biocompatibility of implant materials, principals of osseointegration, implant design, and characterization of bio-mechanical properties) and surgical techniques, case selection, anatomical consideration, and hard and soft tissue surgical management techniques.

To train residents in the methods and application of the evidence based dentistry method.
Residents will gain in-depth knowledge in all aspects of the evidence-based process including an evidence based review.

Techniques and drugs used in general, local and regional anesthesia and analgesia, as well as patient management and support.
Techniques of intubation, phlebotomy, patient monitoring and support will be performed under close supervision, in the hospital environment.

Diagnosis and treatment planning for dental implants including: evaluation of mounted study casts, interpretation of various imaging modalities, assessment of ridge form and volume, assessment of partially edentulous spaces, selection of appropriate implant system, implant size/shape and prosthetic interface, the planning, fabrication, and analysis of surgical guides (stents), esthetic consideration - including emergence profile, soft/hard tissue contours, and amount of keratinized tissue, and the appropriate planning for suite preparation.

Residents will gain in-depth knowledge of oral medicine related to the following areas:

History and physical examination
Evaluation of medical laboratory tests
Mechanisms, interactions, and effects of the pharmaceutical agents used in the diagnosis and management of periodontal diseases
Mechanisms, interactions, and effects of the pharmaceutical agents used to treat systemic conditions on periodontal diseases and their management
Effects of the various systemic diseases and conditions on the incidence, diagnosis, progression and management of periodontal diseases
Effects of periodontal diseases on the incidence, diagnosis, progression and management of various systemic conditions or/and disorders
Intraoral and extraoral pathological lesions of the hard and soft tissues.

Provide comprehensive periodontal treatment on patients with Case Types I through V, all types of periodontal diseases and with medically compromised and handicapped patients.

Normal histology and histopathology of the periodontium.
Histopathology of the lesions that affect the periodontium
Histological changes that occur when the normal and diseased periodontium is subjected to tooth movement and trauma
Value of step-serial sections in evaluating the periodontium
Histological response of the periodontium to therapy
Histopathology of non-plaque related lesions
Histomorphometric techniques
Molecular biology, immunocytochemistry, and the histology of dental implants.

For each resident to participate in a research project during his/her education. The degree of involvement in the project depends on the student's future goals.
Student will become familiar with the scientific method and principles of valid clinical research.
All projects are designed for presentation and publication. The resident participates in the formulation of the manuscript for submission.

To produce a periodontal specialist capable of transmitting knowledge in the clinical and classroom environment on a pre-doctoral and post-doctoral level.
