FAQs
What program do I apply to in ERAS ?
Our program is listed in ERAS as:
- University of Rochester/Internal Medicine; within our program you may choose one or more of three tracks:
- UR Categorical at Strong Memorial Hospital
- UR Research Pathway at Strong Memorial Hospital
- UR Preliminary at Strong Memorial
What's the application deadline?
December 15th. Late applications make scheduling interviews difficult, and most applicants will have submitted their applications by early November.
When will I hear if I am going to be offered an interview?
The selection committee starts reviewing applications in October and we begin sending some interview invitations in mid-October. In many cases, the committee cannot reach a decision until the MSPE/Dean's Letter is released on November 1. We continue to offer interviews on a rolling basis until the application deadline, December 15th.
What visa type is offered for PGY-1 residents?
The University of Rochester supports only the J-1 visa for Graduate Medical Education.
What USMLE scores do I need to be considered?
A passing score on USMLE Step 1 is required before an interview will be granted. There is no specific cutoff passing score; applicants are considered on an individual basis.
Will my application still be considered if I don't pass on one of my initial USMLE exam attempts?
Yes.
How long can I wait to apply after graduating from medical school?
Up to five years.
What if I can't interview on one of the scheduled dates?
Speak with the program administrator. In exceptional cases, including personal hardship, alternate visits can be arranged.
