The University of Rochester Medical Center (URMC) is comprised of the School of Medicine and Dentistry, the School of Nursing, Strong Memorial Hospital, Highland Hospital, Golisano Children's Hospital, the James P. Wilmot Cancer Center, and the Eastman Institute for Oral Health. Rotations and assignments for Internal Medicine residents occur at both Strong Memorial Hospital and Highland Hospital.
Strong Memorial Hospital (SMH)
Strong Memorial Hospital, a 722-bed tertiary care center, is the URMC's primary teaching hospital. SMH is located on the URMC's primary campus, a 4 million-square-foot complex next to the University's River Campus, just a half mile south of downtown Rochester. All of our residents have rotations in inpatient general medicine, inpatient hematology-oncology, medical intensive care, coronary care, and palliative care at SMH. Electives in all major subspecialties can also be taken at SMH.
In addition fifty of our sixty residents have their continuity ambulatory experience in the Strong Internal Medicine faculty-resident practice in the ambulatory care facility attached to SMH.
Highland Hospital (HH)
Highland Hospital is a 268-bed community hospital located just over one mile from SMH and the main URMC campus. In addition to serving as the primary hospital for many primary care practices in the surrounding area, HH is our department's center of excellence for Geriatrics. All of our residents have rotations in inpatient general medicine and Geriatrics at Highland Hospital. Subspecialty electives are also available at HH. Because HH is also the home hospital of the university's Family Medicine residency program, rotations at Highland provide an opportunity for our residents to work alongside their Family Medicine colleagues.
Ten residents have their continuity experience in the Highland faculty-resident practice in medical office building attached to Highland.
Depending on their elective choices, residents may spend time at a variety of University-owned or -affiliated facilities. A number of subspecialty ambulatory practices are located in outpatient complexes within a five minute drive of the main URMC campus. Our new Community Service Elective takes place at the St. Joseph's Neighborhood Health Center, also located within a five minute drive of the main URMC campus.
