The University of Rochester Department of Pathology and Laboratory Medicine trains exceptional residents for practice in the rapidly evolving field of Pathology.

Residents are integral physician-members of our team which is dedicated to serving a diverse patient population throughout western New York in an expanding regional healthcare model.

Residents are provided great breadth and depth of exposure to all fields in Pathology. With an Anatomic Pathology subspecialty model, strong Clinical Pathology training and diverse elective opportunities, residents can personalize their educational experience to prepare them for any future subspecialty or practice setting.

Residents participate in active research programs and projects to improve standards of practice, with the goal of developing pathologists who will drive the future of innovation in pathology.

The motto of the University is "Meliora", meaning "ever better." The Department of Pathology and Laboratory Medicine trains residents to become the pathologists of the future that will continuously aim to be ever better.

What our residents say...

Why URMC?

"The Pathology program at URMC prioritizes patient care, resident education, and resident wellness. These components are the bedrock of every successful residency training program, and this is why our department is outstanding. We have access to the tools and equipment required to receive and process specimens in a clean and safe work environment, and being a member of a team that delivers the best care to patients by providing timely and accurate diagnoses is an amazing feeling.

Our educational curriculum is designed to maximize individual residents’ potentials in a structured learning environment with measurable improvements in performance over time.  The program also provides one-on-one support and guidance from experienced mentors when making important career decisions. There are multiple Pathology fellowship options available for Clinical and Anatomic Pathology.

We are part of a community that recognizes the importance of resident wellbeing with many fun activities planned throughout the year and ideas for events are always welcome. Our program is in a great location, family-friendly, and affordable with something for people of all ages. The music community is thriving, there are indoor and outdoor sport facilities, bike trails, playgrounds, and parks.

I am very happy to be a part of URMC Pathology, and coming here is one of the best decisions I have ever made. I am confident that the resources available at our program will empower me to be an accomplished pathologist in the future. This is one of the best programs in the world so check out our page and join us soon!"
