Our Residents
A Letter from the Residents
Greetings from Rochester, NY!
We are excited that you are considering our Pediatric Neurology Residency Program and very glad that you might join us, in what we consider to be one of the most fascinating, interesting and fun jobs in medicine! We also think that this is one of the best places in the country to train in our specialty.
Our residency program benefits from our environment in a 124 bed inpatient tertiary care Children’s Hospital, which is a major referral center for the greater upstate New York region, in addition to containing a Level IIID Neonatal Intensive Care Unit which is a Regional Perinatal Center, state of the art pediatric emergency room which is a Level 1 pediatric trauma center, a large mixed Pediatric Intensive Care Unit and Cardiac Care Unit. We share patients with the Strong Center for Developmental Disabilities and are one of 8 Inherited Metabolic Diseases Specialty Centers in the state of New York, providing a wide variety of rare disease and complex patients to both our inpatient and outpatient experiences The Children’s Hospital also recently received a $20 million gift from local philanthropist B. Thomas Golisano towards the building of a new state-of-the-art children’s hospital which will be coming in the next few years. In addition the University of Rochester is a nationally recognized leader in Pediatric Neurology and Pediatric Neurosurgery (U.S. News and World Report (2010-2011)).
Training to be a Child Neurologist requires a strong basis in pediatrics, adult neurology, and rigorous and varied experience in the neurologic diseases of the developing brain. Our program offers interaction with wonderful pediatricians through the Golisano Children’s Hospital, with several of our residents completing their pediatrics training through the categorical pediatrics program. Our residency training program in adult neurology ranks as one of the best in the country, with truly excellent education and patient experiences during our 12 months of clinical adult neurology training. In Pediatric Neurology, we have wonderful, friendly and supportive faculty who are also world renowned for their expertise and research pursuits, who work closely with us during our 2 dedicated years of Pediatric Neurology training.
Our residents are well integrated with the adult neurology residency with shared conferences and training experiences. We participate in research, with projects among our faculty and spread across the medical center and university. The Pediatric Neurology residents attend and present at national clinical and research meetings, teach the U of R medical students in the 2nd year neurosciences curriculum, and can elect to serve as teaching faculty during the annual trip to Jagiellonian University in Krakow, Poland. This emphasis on teaching is tirelessly championed by our entire faculty and especially Dr. Jozefowicz, the Associate Chair for Education in the Department of Neurology, who is a national leader in neurology education. While all of the above opportunities are pretty standard to the program, we know that some residents will have specialized interests and career tracks, and our residency program is small enough and has such a truly excellent advocate and mentor in our Division head, Dr Jonathan Mink, that we can also often help to establish unique teaching, learning, and research experience that can be tailored to your interests.
We have many social events throughout the year, both with the Pediatric Neurology faculty and with the greater neurology and medical communities. When we aren’t in the hospital, we get to spend time hanging out in the beautiful wilds of Upstate New York (among the current residents we have kayakers, skiers, hikers, snow-shoers, and photographers), attending some of the Rochester area’s many, many, (many) festivals, listening to concerts from the Eastman School of Music or the Rochester Philharmonic, or just chillin’ in the local excellent restaurants and bars.
So now you know why we love it here, and we look forward to showing you around our city and our program! We look forward to hearing from you and meeting you and are confident that you will agree that this is a wonderful place to learn the best job on earth!
