Scholarship, in its broadest definition, is an integral component of residency training.
Recognizing that no dominant scientific approach presently explains all psychiatric conditions, we view research as an essential element in the:
- Ongoing development of psychiatry as a medical discipline
- Training of future psychiatrists as clinicians or investigators
Although it is not required, we encourage all residents to participate in supervised independent research. Residents who wish to present at a national meeting may apply for up to $500 in departmental funding. They may also use their annual professional stipend to fund attendance at national meetings.
Each PGY-4 resident is expected to prepare a publication-quality scholarly paper. This work, which may be based on the resident’s own research or an innovative or scholarly literature review, is presented at Grand Rounds. Close collaboration with an assigned supervisor/mentor is an essential component of this experience.
