The integrated vascular surgery residency at the University of Rochester dedicates 5 years to clinical training in vascular surgery combined with core rotations in general surgery and vascular disease.  The 0+5 training paradigm leads to primary board certification in vascular surgery.  As one of the first institutions to embrace an integrated training program in 2006, we offer a unique opportunity for trainees to learn the art and  science of vascular surgery in a variety of training environments: urban academic (Strong Memorial Hospital), urban community (Highland Hospital), and rural community (F.F. Thompson) and (Geneva General Hospital). The varied training environments enable our residents to work with faculty in an apprenticeship training model of comprehensive vascular care, allowing them to care for diverse communities of patients. This mixed training model provides a truly rewarding experience. Other unique aspects of the curriculum include dedicated junior and senior catheterization laboratory rotations, and an ultrasound imaging rotation in PGY-2, after which our trainees are eligible to take the PVI exam.

We take pride in our serious commitment to the education of the integrated vascular residents.  This is reflected in our educational curriculum, which includes routine conferences such as Indications, Morbidity & Mortality, and multidisciplinary case conference with Cardiology, in addition to didactic sessions guided by faculty members and VSITE preparation.  In an era of diminished exposure to open surgery, the University of Rochester is fortunate to have maintained a large volume of open vascular surgery. While we practice the gamut of vascular surgery, we have particular expertise and experience in the management of carotid, aortic, peripheral vascular disease, venous disease, end-stage renal disease, and thoracic outlet syndrome. Similarly, your exposure to endovascular surgery at the University of Rochester includes large volumes of endovascular surgery incorporating carotid stenting, TCAR, EVAR, and TEVAR. You will be trained to perform endovascular surgery in our hybrid operating room, a dedicated vascular surgery operating room suite designed with state-of-the-art imaging as well as intravascular ultrasound, percutaneous mechanical thrombectomy, and computer-assisted design for endograft stent sizing. You will also be trained to perform percutaneous procedures in outpatient catheterization laboratories. The Division is active in the regional and national leadership of the Vascular Quality Initiative (VQI).

Our residents routinely present research projects at national meetings

Our training program is geared to provide the best training so that our graduates will enter into practice with a comprehensive and complete education.  It is our hope that we train clinically excellent surgeons who are leaders in their institution and the field of vascular surgery.
