It's not Malibu, Soho, or South Beach. But Rochester (aka "The North Coast") has plenty to offer the single person interested in a lively night life or an invigorating daytime getaway. Visit Park Avenue for trendy shopping, dining, and living. The East End is the place for hip coffee bars and terrific live music. In fact, theEastman School of Music, which happens to be in the East End and has spawned top groups such as Foreigner and Spiro Gyra, ensures an ample supply of exceptional musicians at venues all around the city. Like movies? An eclectic assortment of foreign and quirky American films is always the bill of fare on The Little Theater's multiple "independent" screens. For classic or merely enjoyable old films, as well as an occasional appearance by a famous filmmaker or actor, the Dryden Theater at the George Eastman House simply has no equal anywhere.
Rochester and its environs are laced with bike trails and hiking paths, including the former mule trails along the picturesque Erie Canal. The community hosts several marathon-type runs every year. Lake Ontario, the idyllic Finger Lakes, the Genesee River, and a host of other waterways provide ample venues for water sports of every type. Within a short drive of the city you can find rock climbing, spelunking, snow skiing, whitewater rafting, mountain biking, moto-cross, and skydiving. For long weekends, the Adirondacks offer an abundance of nature unspoiled, or the international allure of Lake Placid and its Olympic venues.
Some of America's finest wineries are nestled among the rolling hills of Upstate New York';s Finger Lakes, conducting tours and tastings less than an hour away from Rochester. A livelier experience can be found in Niagara Falls—with its famous thundering "wonder of the world," its glimmering casinos, and a pleasing variety of other attractions. And less than three hours away is the world-class City of Toronto—famous for its modernity, diversity, safety, and its stunning array of shops, restaurants, and entertainment.
