Interdepartmental Graduate Program in Neuroscience (IGPN)
Kerry O'Banion, M.D., Ph.D. instructs
Neuroscience is a highly interdisciplinary field of inquiry concerned with the scientific study of the nervous system in health and disease. Neuroscientists at the University of Rochester utilize concepts and tools from anatomy, biochemistry, cell biology, computer science, engineering, genetics, molecular biology, neurology, pathology, pharmacology, physiology, psychiatry and psychology to understand how the brain is organized and develops; how it functions to control behavior, thought, and emotion; how it adapts in learning and memory; and how its dysfunction leads to disease. In more than 70 laboratories located throughout the University’s Medical Center and the adjacent campus of the School of Arts, Sciences, and Engineering, neuroscience-intensive questions are probed at the molecular, cellular, systems and whole organism levels, and in animals ranging from the roundworm C. elegans to mice to humans.
The Interdepartmental Graduate Program in Neuroscience (IGPN) provides state-of-the-art research-based training for students seeking the Ph.D. degree in Neuroscience. The program provides trainees with the critical skills necessary to become successful independent neuroscientists, whether they seek employment in an academic, government, or corporate environment. This is accomplished with the support of a large and highly interactive group of faculty representing more than 15 departments and 7 centers and institutes in both the School of Medicine and Dentistry and The College. While students come to Rochester with diverse backgrounds and interests, they have in common an intense curiosity about the workings of the brain and a passion for discovery.
