Cell Biology

An understanding of biology at the cellular level is central to all biomedical disciplines. Most diseases are manifest by changes in the morphology of cells and tissues secondary to defects in one or more cellular processes.

Classical pathology has relied on the concept of form follows function. In other words, diseases change the structure of cells and tissue, and this change in structure is the basis of impaired function. Today, the goal of disease-based research is to understand the underlying defects in cellular function that lead to abnormal cellular and tissue structure.

Researchers in the PWD cluster have ongoing projects investigating many aspects of cellular function including: signal transduction, mitochondrial genomics and function, post-transcriptional RNA processing and editing, gene regulation, cell-cell communication and matrix interactions, and protein synthesis and secretion.
