Orientation Class and Walking Tour

It is suggested that you register for this class approximately three months prior to your due date. You can park in the Ramp Garage, enter the Lobby, and take the silver elevators on your left to the 2nd floor and to the A & B Conference Rooms.

  • Take part in a walking tour of the Obstetric Service at Strong Memorial Hospital.
  • Watch a short slide presentation of the areas not included in the walking tour.
  • Learn about what to expect during your hospital stay.

Fee: There is no charge for this class, however, a pre-registration is required.
Time: Sundays from 3:00 – 4:00 p.m.

Prenatal Newborn Care Class

In this class, you will learn about:

  • Newborn appearance, behavior and reflexes
  • Caring for your newborn—including bathing, diapering, taking a temperature and cord care
  • Safety—baby equipment, toys, car seats
  • When to call the doctor

Fee: $10 includes mother and support person
Time: Sundays 1:00 – 2:30 p.m.

Prepared Childbirth Series

It is suggested that you register for this four-week series around your 28th week of pregnancy. Please wear comfortable clothing, bring a pillow and small blanket to each class. You will learn about:

  • Process of labor
  • Relaxation techniques
  • Breathing techniques and positions for labor and birth
  • Comfort measures, including medications
  • Coach's role
  • What to expect during your hospital stay
  • Preparing for baby at home

Fee: $75.00 (includes mother and support person, parking, refreshments)

September: Thursdays: 9/5, 9/12, 9/19, 9/26

Prepared Childbirth Refresher

You will learn about:

  • Comfort measures including relaxation and breathing techniques, as well as medications
  • Sibling preparation and planning for your changing family
  • Reflect on your previous birth experience
  • Learn about a vaginal birth after Cesarean
  • Walking tour of unit

Fee: $30.00 (includes mother and support person)
Time: Saturdays 1:00 – 4:00 p.m.

Prenatal Exploring Breastfeeding

In this class, you will obtain information to help you make an informed choice about how to feed your baby. Discussion will focus on:

  • Health benefits
  • Cost/convenience
  • Technique/preparation
  • Baby's feeding cues
  • How to know your baby is getting enough

Fee: $25.00 (includes mother and support person), Free for UR employees
Time: Saturdays 1:00 – 3:00 p.m.

Sibling Class

This class is ideal for children ages 3 years and older. Each child attending should bring a doll or stuffed animal, and a photo of himself or herself as a newborn. Also, please encourage your child to bring a drawing of their family. What your child(ren) will learn:

  • What it will be like to have a new baby in the family
  • Becoming a big sister or brother
  • What a new baby can do
  • Short tour to see where mommy will be

Those children planning to attend the birth of their new sibling are encouraged to stay for an additional 30 minutes. We will be giving more information on the process of labor (using charts and drawings) and a family centered birth video will be shown.

Fee: $20.00 for first child, $5.00 for each additional child
Time: Saturdays 10:00 – 12:00 p.m.

Breastfeeding & Returning to Work

In this class you will learn tools to promote confidence in your decision to continue breastfeeding successfully as you return to work. U of R employees will tour the employee pumping place.

Fee: $10, free for UR employees
Time: Saturdays 1:00 – 3:00 p.m.

Grandparents Class

This two-hour class focuses on grandparents learning about "today's baby". There will be a review on current changes. Keep yourself updated for your new grandchild.

Fee: $10 for one or two persons
Time: Saturdays 1:00 – 3:00 p.m.

Infant Massage Class

In this class you will learn the benefits and techniques of infant massage. An excellent way for all family members to spend one-on-one quiet time with your baby and enhance bonding.

Fee: $20 includes your baby and adult(s)
Time: Saturdays, 1:00 – 3:00 p.m.
Dates: 5/18, 7/13, 9/14, 11/23

Marvelous Multiples

This one full day class is offered to provide support and assist you in gaining more knowledge about your pregnancy, the birth process with multiples and life ahead with your babies.
Fee: $95 includes mother and support person
Time: Saturdays, 8:30 a.m. – 4:30 p.m.

Please call the Strong Beginnings Office at (585) 275-4058 to register. Upon registration, you will be sent written confirmation including class location information. In the event you need to cancel, refunds will be granted if you notify us 24 hours prior to your class. Class may be cancelled if less than 3 participants are registered.

Send payment by mail. Please make check payable to Strong Beginnings and mail payment to: Strong Beginnings Office, 601 Elmwood Avenue, Box 619-12, Rochester, NY, 14642. All payments must be received 2 weeks prior to class.
