Hypertension is estimated to affect 50 million Americans and is a leading cause of cardiovascular disease, stroke, and kidney disease. Although such morbid events as stroke and myocardial infarction are uncommon in childhood, it is clear that the origins of cardiovascular disease and essential hypertension begin early in life and that hypertensive end-organ damage may occur at a young age. Understanding the early time course in how hypertension affects the susceptible organs is important, so that strategies to prevent the development of target-organ damage can be developed.
Dr. Lande is studying vascular changes as markers of early hypertensive target-organ damage in children. In addition, he is studying the neurocognitive effects of hypertension in children and determining any potential benefit of antihypertensive therapy on cognition. He is also focusing on the psychological correlates of hypertension in children.
