How to Apply

Thank you for your interest in the Doctoral Internship Program at the University of Rochester. Each year, eight full-time interns are selected: three to four positions in the General Adult Track, one in the Deaf Wellness Track, and four in the Child and Adolescent Track. In the event that the Deaf Wellness position is not filled, the position will role over to General Adult.

We select the most qualified candidates regardless of sex, race, creed, color, national origin, disability, or age.

All applicants must be matriculated in an APA/CPA-approved Ph.D. or Psy.D. program in Clinical or Counseling Psychology. Applicants must also demonstrate adequate preparation for internship as indicated by their credentials and their graduate Training Director's endorsement. We expect an applicant to have had basic coursework and practica in psychological assessment and psychotherapeutic intervention techniques with varied patient/client populations.

Interviews with the Training Director, other faculty, and current interns may be helpful to applicants but are not required. Unfortunately, we are unable to offer interviews to all applicants. Invitations for interviews will be sent via email by December 15th. We ask that applicants do not attempt to arrange an interview until they have been contacted.

Our Program is a participant of the AAPI Match.

  • Applicants will need to register with APPIC Online, which may be accessed from the APPIC Web site.
  • Additional material is requested: Please attach to your online application two recent de-identified samples of your written clinical work (this should include an assessment report and an intake or treatment summary)
  • Deaf Wellness Track applicants please see below for additional materials needed

Deaf Wellness Center Specialization Track

Applicants for this track must be proficient in ASL and have prior experience serving deaf individuals. Applications from persons who are themselves deaf or hard-of-hearing are particularly encouraged and will be evaluated in an affirmative action framework.

Applicants' ASL proficiency can be documented by including one of the following three items with your APPIC application:

  • A video clip, at least 10 minutes in length, which thoroughly demonstrates the applicant's expressive and receptive ASL skills (a ten minute, casual conversation between the applicant and another fluent signer, on any topic, should suffice) (see below for mailing information)
  • Documentation that you have passed the Sign Language Proficiency Interview (Newell, Caccamise, Boardman, & Ray-Holcomb, 1983) at the advanced level or beyond
  • Evidence of RID interpreter certification

No other sign language test results will be accepted nor will any statements regarding ASL proficiency that may be contained in letters of recommendation.
