Seeing the Whole Picture: A New Model of Behavioral Health in Ophthalmic Care
At the University of Rochester’s Flaum Eye Institute (FEI), patient care extends far beyond prescriptions and surgeries. Under the leadership of David DiLoreto, M.D., Ph.D., Chair of the Department of Ophthalmology and Director of FEI, the care continuum has been reimagined to address the often-overlooked emotional and social impacts of vision loss. With over 150,000 annual patient visits, the Institute is a national leader in eye care — and now, in behavioral health integration.
The newly launched FEI Behavioral Health Service reflects this holistic vision. Spearheaded by Kwasi Boaitey, Ph.D., LCSW, the program embeds behavioral health support directly within clinical workflows. This innovative model bridges the gap between medical treatment and mental health care for patients navigating the challenges of vision loss.
“Sudden or progressive vision loss frequently triggers emotional distress, anxiety, and depression,” said Boaitey. “These responses, when unaddressed, can disrupt care, deepen isolation, and even accelerate avoidable blindness. Our embedded team connects with patients in real time, offering support when and where it’s needed most.”

The multidisciplinary team includes technicians, ophthalmologists, nurses, peer specialists, psychiatrists, psychologists, clinical social workers, and trainees. Together, they uphold four key pillars:
1. Early identification and treatment of emotional distress
2. Support for adapting to vision loss while maintaining independence
3. Improved adherence to treatment and follow-up care
4. Prevention of avoidable crises through proactive, coordinated support
This comprehensive model also acknowledges the ripple effects of visual impairment on caregivers. FEI is also addressing logistical barriers, such as transportation, while developing multimodal resources to strengthen the therapeutic alliance between patients and providers.
By expanding the scope of care in ophthalmology, the Well-Being Service aims to enhance patient quality of life, engagement, and clinical outcomes — offering a blueprint for a more compassionate and integrated future in eye care.
