DXA Scan - What to Expect

DXA measures bone density at key places in the body, including the spine and hip. It uses a weak form of X-ray to scan your bones quickly. A computer then converts the information to numbers that tell us about your bone density.

There is no pain involved in the DXA scan, nor do you need to be concerned about claustrophobia. The scanner passes over you while you lay on a padded table the size of a twin bed.

Come prepared for your DXA scan appointment.

• Bring an order for testing from your primary care physician.
• Check with your insurance carrier to determine your coverage before scheduling your DXA scan appointment.
• Wear comfortable clothing. You will not need to remove your clothes.
• The Center for Bone Health has a Hoyer lift to accommodate patients up to 400 pounds, as well as patients in wheelchairs.
• When your DXA scan is completed, the technician will take the results to one of our staff physicians for review and diagnosis.
