Greetings from Jeff and Pat

"And no, we don't know where it will lead. We just know there's something much bigger than any of us here." – Steve Jobs

As the 2011 conference year comes to a close, we move into full swing preparing for exciting educational offerings in the upcoming year. Please take note of the 2012 CME conference dates posted in the right-hand column of this newsletter.

2011 live conferences will be concluded with a grand finale as Dr. Ralph Józefowicz celebrates the 18th year of his very successful CME activity, Neurology for the PCP. Please be sure to read more about this very important conference below.

We also want to mention another service provided by our office. Some of you may have noted the description of a limited registration offering on the CPE web site.  This service is an outgrowth of our purchase and implementation of a ‘Cvent’ automated registration system. This software improves efficiencies and provides our customers with the convenience and flexibility of secure electronic registration and payment. We have transitioned all of our conferences and some of our regularly scheduled series from paper to electronic processes. Many Departments and other URMC groups hold other events that require participant registration, collection of payments, and reporting on attendees or other details of the event. If these tasks are absorbing your valuable staff time, consider contacting us to learn how our limited registration service that can simplify logistics planning and save you time in a very customer friendly way.

As always we seek your comments and welcome any questions you may have. With best wishes through the holiday season,

December Activity Highlight

Neurology for the PCP – December 15, 2011

Activity Director Dr. Ralph Józefowicz designs CME curriculum that gives area primary care physicians tools critical to providing better care for patients with neurological conditions.

Advances in neurology have exceeded all expectations during the past decade.  New treatments have become available for migraine, stroke and back pain. Neurology is one of the fastest changing fields in all of medicine, and has differentiated into numerous well-defined complex subspecialties.  These factors make it an enormous challenge to stay current.  The experts developing and delivering the educational content of this program include national leaders in neurologic education and its various subspecialties.

Now in its 18th year, the course continues to provide primary care physicians, physician assistants, nurse practitioners and nurses with a thorough, practical, and readily applied treatment updates on various types of acute and chronic neurologic disorders. “The 18th Annual Update in Neurology features extensive interactive case-based teaching about common neurological conditions by local and national experts,” said Activity Director, Dr. Ralph Jozefowicz. “Primary care providers will receive practical information about the diagnosis and management of migraine, somatoform disorders, back pain and stroke.”

Topics cover a broad range of conditions, including stroke, somatoform disorders, back pain and migraine.  The goal is to enable participants with the information they need to increase their knowledge base, further improve their skills, and enhance their care of patients with neurologic disorders in the clinical setting.

The conference starts at 8:30 am, Thursday, December 15 at the UR School of Medicine and Dentistry, for more information or to register click here – or – call the Office of Continuing Professional Education, 585-275-4392.

The University of Rochester School of Medicine and Dentistry is accredited by the Accreditation Council for Continuing Medical Education to provide medical education for physicians.  The University of Rochester School of Medicine and Dentistry designates this live activity for a maximum of 3.5 AMA PRA Category 1 Credits ™.  Physicians should only claim credit commensurate with the extent of their participation in the activity.

Crucial Conversations
January 3 - February 9, 2012
A crucial conversation is a discussion between two or more people where stakes are high, opinions vary, and emotions run strong. These conversations – when handled poorly or ignored – cause teams and organizations to get less-than-desirable results. This training, geared towards URMC-affiliated physicians, teaches how to achieve spirited dialogue at all levels in the organization; bring the best ideas to the surface, make the highest-quality decisions, and act on your decisions with unity and commitment. For more information contact Susan Van Dongen at 585-275-9601.

Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction
January 4 - February 8, 2012
This is a six week program in which physicians, psychologists, nurses, therapists, and other health care professionals will learn how to face the stressful events that arise daily in ways that result in more balance, stability, and personal satisfaction, and can lead to improved care of ourselves. For more information contact Dr. Mick Krasner at 585-341-7230.

Patient Safety: Building a Safer Health System
February 2 - June 21, 2012
The program is designed to increase your knowledge of how to improve safety and to educate participants on the latest thinking and theories regarding safety. The program will consist of ten individual sessions and will combine presentations with case studies and discussion. For more information contact Judy Hughes at 585-275-7712

Rochester Regional Anesthesia Symposium
February 4 - 5, 2012
This activity is being planned for regional anesthesia providers, pain medicine practitioners, and nursing staff to meet a growing community need as the technology and techniques of ultrasound-guided perineural injections and catheter placement represents a growth area in anesthesia beyond the comfort level of many local practitioners. For more information contact Dr. Cassandre Victor-Vega at 585-275-7712

Treating the Complications of Diabetes 2012
February 11, 2012
With the number of diabetes patients and the treatment costs continuing to rise each year, the need for focused patient care related to diabetes is clearly evident. This conference will equip participants with information to increase their knowledge base, improve their skills, and enhance their care of patients with diabetes and diabetes related disorders. Click here for more information.

Medical and Surgical Aspects of Esophageal and Foregut Disorders, Hawaii
February 15 - 22, 2012

Monthly Events

Simulation Course: Training for the Unexpected
January - December 2011
Simulation is the art of making artificial events appear real. The value of simulation in obstetrics is its ability to mimic rare clinical events that occur too infrequently for care teams to acquire expertise. This unique educational course offers teams the opportunity to work closely with each other to develop clinical skills, practice effective communication, and team work skill sets.
