Education in Medicine
URMC Department Of Medicine
Education Information for the Department of Medicine!

The Department of Medicine provides lectures, classes, and information sessions that seek to enhance the knowledge of the participants.

The Department of Medicine continues to be a major contributor to undergraduate education at the University of Rochester. Many dedicated faculty are involved in all aspects of education, including pre-clinical and clinical medical students, graduate students, and allied health student education. The faculty, drawing from their experiences in modular teaching, was critical to the planning, preparation, and implementation of a cohesive, integrated modular teaching program that began in the fall of 2001 termed the Double Helix curriculum.  The centerpiece of the undergraduate clinical experience in medicine remains the Medicine Core Clerkship Program. The students work on rotations in general medicine at the Strong Memorial Hospital and Highland Hospital and receive both clinical experience and interactive didactic course work.

The Internal Medicine Residency Training program at the University of Rochester is one of the most comprehensive and diverse programs in the country.  Through its committed faculty and closely affiliated hospitals, the program provides opportunities for residents to develop essential clinical skills as internists, to learn the many important diagnostic and therapeutic and diagnostic concepts in internal medicine, and to evolve into complete physicians who possess not only textbook knowledge, but also the personal attributes patients expect of superb physicians. The 22 medicine interns, who began training in the program in July 2002 were selected from a pool of 900 applicants, of whom 250 were interviewed. The residency's success in transforming promising applicants into outstanding physicians is reflected by the high rate of residents who pass the American Board of Internal Medicine certifying examinations the first time.  Approximately 90% of the residents choose to pursue subspecialty fellowship training
