What is a Telehealth Network?

The worlds of telecommunications and biomedical engineering are quickly merging to create one of the most exciting new frontiers of medicine, telehealth. Telehealth refers to a wide range of new technologies to deliver healthcare information and services using digital images, computers and medical monitoring devices linked by internet, satellite, television or telephone lines. In Rochester, we have initiated telehealth projects that look at the practical implementation of this technology into the day-to-day practice of primary care pediatrics.

Our goals are to develop the hardware and software infrastructure to link all pediatric practices in the region, to answer the basic questions of reliability, safety, product limitations and new applications; to solve local reimbursement issues and to integrate telehealth into the academic curriculum of medical students, nurse practitioner students and pediatric residents.
