Parent and Child Training (PACT)

Parent and Child Training is a comprehensive child abuse and neglect prevention project. The program provides services to women who are:

  • Monroe County residents
  • Receiving care through the Strong Memorial Hospital Obstetrical Clinic
  • Assessed as being compromised in their ability to adequately parent their children

All clients are assessed for psychosocial risk factors which might result in the need for foster care placement of their children if they didn't receive preventive services. Risk factors include:

  • Parental mental retardation
  • Drug or alcohol abuse
  • Psychiatric disturbance / history of psychiatric hospitalizations
  • History of having been maltreated as a child
  • Isolation, depression and potential incapacity to cope with the responsibility of parenting

Social work staff for the PACT Program provide the following services to their clients:

  • Comprehensive psychosocial assessment and treatment planning
  • Case management
  • Paraprofessional home visitation focused on getting needed resources
  • Training in parenting, household management and child care
  • Age-related childhood experiences and building self-esteem
  • Individual counseling on interpersonal relationships
  • Crisis intervention
  • Education and support groups
  • Advocacy
  • Transportation
