As mentioned in previous newsletters, our reaccreditation by the Accreditation Council for Continuing Medical Education (ACCME) was awarded in December. The process was beneficial on many levels. In addition to maintaining our ability to provide continuing medical education, a net result of the review is the enhancement of our system to identify and resolve potential conflicts of interest (COI) within our continuing medical education activities.
Based upon ACCME’s feedback, we initiated in-depth benchmarking discussion with nine institutions of comparable size to URMC regarding their policies and procedures in this area. Based on these discussions and thorough review of our policy and procedure, we will be instituting the following changes: (1) Our longstanding forms have been complex, because they combine the declarations of disclosures with the methods used to resolve any potential COI. Our new forms are simpler. One form focuses on individual faculty declarations. A separate form, used if any speakers or planning committee members have disclosures requiring review, is used to document how any potential COI was resolved. (2) These forms, along with the rest of the CME application, will be available online in a format that walks the user through each step. The result is a process that is both more user-friendly and fully compliant with the ACCME requirements. We expect to make these new forms available online in the very near future, and will be in touch with all CME activity faculty and staff coordinators at that time to communicate the changes in more detail.
We are excited to implement this new process and look forward to your comments and welcome any questions you may have.

Simulation
Course: Training for the Unexpected Simulation
is the art of making artificial events appear real. The value of
simulation in obstetrics is its ability to mimic rare clinical
events that occur too infrequently for care teams to acquire
expertise. This unique educational course offers teams the
opportunity to work closely with each other to develop clinical
skills, practice effective communication, and team work skill sets.
