The Division of Pediatric Hematology/
Oncology provides full service for all children with cancer, nonmalignant blood diseases, and disorders treated by bone marrow transplantation. Faculty possess clinical expertise that covers the entire breadth of the discipline and the integration of services within other specialties in the Children’s Hospital and Cancer Center.
Patients have the opportunity to participate in advanced clinical research through the division’s participation in the Children’s Oncology Group and the Dana Farber Leukemia Consortium. Novel clinical care developed in the division is also available to children with sickle cell disease, brain tumors, leukemia and those needing bone marrow transplantation. Division faculty play a leading role in the Experimental Hematopoiesis Program of the Cancer Center.
Other research-based services include studies of childhood cancer survivors, cognitive and educational performance of children with cancer and blood diseases, application of alternative and complementary medicine approaches for control of symptoms, and development of palliative care systems for children with life-threatening illnesses.
The division conducts teaching rounds for the house staff team caring for the hematology/oncology inpatient service. Residents and medical students also take electives in the ambulatory clinic, where diagnostic and follow-up care is provided, and on the bone marrow transplant unit.
