Clinical Experiences

The total amount of clinical time for fellows averages 25-30%. Most clinical experiences occur in the primary care clinic. Fellows spend one half-day per week in a Continuity Clinic Session, serving both as preceptor and attending in charge of patients, working side-by-side with a faculty member. Fellows will spend a second half-day seeing their own panel of about 200 patients. Clinical care includes preventive visits (approximately 50%), acute visits (30%) and follow-up visits for chronic conditions (20%).

Fellows also participate in a variety of innovative clinical experiences. They learn about mental health care by working with psychologists, social workers, and a psychiatrist who are physically located within the clinic, providing opportunity for joint visits with mental health and psychosocial experts. Fellows interact with a legal aid lawyer, learning to help families deal with problems such as domestic violence and access to resources in the community. Other multidisciplinary experts in the primary care clinic are available for joint patient care visits: a nutritionist, social workers, psychologists, and child abuse professionals. Fellows experience telemedicine care as well.

Fellows also serve as inpatient attending for our clinic and general pediatrics hospitalizations for 4 weeks per year. On the average, only 2-4 patients are hospitalized at a time, although some of these are complex, with multiple physical and psychosocial problems.
