Neonatology Fellowship

Neonatology Fellowship Program: Year 2

During the second year clinical and teaching skills are enhanced, however additional emphasis is placed on research.

Rotations

NICU Clinical Care (10 weeks, total): Fellows serve as the “On-Service Fellow” in the Golisano Childrens' Hospital at Strong NICU, assuming primary patient care responsibilities as in the first year, though generally requiring less direct oversight from the attending neonatologist.

Acting SCN Attending (4 weeks, total): Fellows serve as the “Acting-Attending” in the Rochester General Hospital Special Care Nursery (RGH SCN – level II facility). Under the supervision of a Neonatology faculty member, the Fellow is responsible for rounding with house-staff on a daily basis, providing bedside teaching, and giving formal didactic rounds 2-3 times a week. The Acting-Attending has graduated responsibility for patient care and communication with families and with other physicians and begins to take on some of the administrative functions of an attending neonatologist, including billing, admission and daily patient notes, patient database management, etc.

Neonatal Cardiac Care (4 weeks, total*): In order to obtain additional experience with patients with significant congenital heart disease, Fellows join the pediatric cardiothoracic surgery team. They attend patient care conferences with the CT surgeon and cardiologists, may be present in the operating room during surgery, and follow the patient’s course postoperatively in the Pediatric Cardiac Intensive Care Unit.
*May be completed in 2nd and/or 3rd Fellowship year

Clinical Support and Continuing Care Rotation (6 weeks, total): Fellows in this rotation provide technical support for the NICU on-service Fellow, attend the Neonatal Continuing Care Clinic, manage complex neonatal transports of acutely ill infants, prepare and present Fellows' Conference.

Research (24 weeks, total): Research Education continues in the second year.  Fellows will have identified and developed research projects by the end of their first year to the point of presentation of concepts and protocols to faculty and fellows. Active data collection or work on their eventual academic product will have begun.  Frequent (weekly or bi-weekly) meetings with research mentors are encouraged.

Vacation (4 weeks, total)
