Pulmonology Fellowship

Curriculum

Clinical Electives

Fellows are able to choose from the following list of electives:

Pediatric Intensive Care Unit

The fellow is encouraged to elect to function as a PICU fellow assuming major responsibility (under the supervision of a PICU attending) for patient care and teaching of pediatric interns and residents in the 22-bed Pediatric Intensive Care Unit/Pediatric Cardiac Intensive Care Unit.  In the PICU he or she will gain experience (with appropriate supervision by PICU attendings, surgeons, anesthesiologists) in:

Additional instruction regarding theory and techniques of airway management, mechanical ventilation and resuscitation physiology are reviewed.

Neonatal Intensive Care Unit

The fellow will have an opportunity to function as a NICU fellow, with particular emphasis on all aspects of respiratory management of neonatal patients, including:

Anesthesia

During this elective, fellows obtain instruction and experience in airway management including: tracheal intubation, use of common anesthetic agents and muscle paralyzing agents, and other considerations of clinical pharmacology in the comatose patient.  Management of the patient in the acute postoperative period is taught.

Allergy/Immunology

During this elective, exposure is given to caring for patients (primarily outpatient) with various allergic disorders, primarily those involving the respiratory tract. Fellows also see patients with less common immunologically mediated diseases and learn about normal and abnormal immunology of the lungs.

Pathology

Fellows review all relevant surgical lung material from children and adults, will participate in the autopsies of children dying of cardiorespiratory deaths, and will review pulmonary pathology slide materials.

Radiology

Fellows review films of pediatric patients suspected of cardiopulmonary disease with the pediatric radiologist and will be present at any special respiratory-related radiologic procedures in Pediatric Radiology (e.g., Chest CT, MRI, Interventional Radiological Procedures).  In addition, time is spent in Nuclear Medicine to gain experience in interpretation of ventilation and perfusion scans.  Relevant films in the Pediatric Radiology teaching file may be reviewed.

Pediatric Cardiology

Fellows rotate in the Pediatric Cardiology Division to sharpen their physical assessment and noninvasive diagnostic skills of cardiac patients, to experience invasive and noninvasive diagnostic techniques (ultrasound, nuclear medicine, cardiac catheterization) and to participate in cardiac catheterizations.

Pediatric Otolaryngology

Through this elective, fellows work with pediatric otolaryngology attendings and residents in the outpatient clinic, operating room and inpatient service in the evaluation and care of children with problems of the upper airway.

Sleep Center

Under the Direction of Dr. Heidi Connolly, fellows evaluate patients with sleep disorder and breathing syndromes. They learn to interpret sleep studies and make recommendations for management of sleep disorders.
