Research at URMC is growing and thriving. Across medicine, nursing and dentistry, we have attained a balanced mix of basic, translational and clinical science. Overall sponsored research in the School of Medicine and Dentistry totaled $232 million in the last fiscal year, $159 million of which was from NIH. This includes $6,956,157 of NIH funding (2006) for our highly ranked research program in oral biology and translational dental research. Ranked 12th in NIH funding to schools of nursing in 2005, the University of Rochester School of Nursing is now positioned to reach the top 10 in NIH funding.
Our Goal
Our overall research goal is to use science and technology to improve health. In our basic research program, we strive to unravel the underpinnings of both normal and pathologic biology. Before us is an unprecedented opportunity to advance our understanding of the fundamental principles of biologic processes. New discoveries lie at the interface of multiple disciplines including physics, chemistry, biology and computation. Such synergistic collaborations can result in groundbreaking research and the creation of new paradigms; our key challenge, crystallized in our Strategic Plan, is to translate these fundamental discoveries into usable tests, drugs, devices, and procedures and to test these new applications in appropriate groups of patients to be sure they are safe, effective, and cost-efficient.
