More Opportunities to BUILD Diversity at the University

Help build diversity at University of Rochester by developing a collaboration with faculty or hosting an undergraduate student for research training from Xavier University of Louisiana, a Historically Black University.  UR and Xavier have developed a partnership through  the NIH’s Building Infrastructure Leading to Diversity (BUILD) program, which studies how to attract and retain diverse students in biomedical research .

UR CTSI Wins ResearchMatch.org Social Media Contest

ResearchMatch.org (RM), an online clinical study recruitment tool, recently organized a social media campaign and competition to recognize its users and spread the word about their service. UR CTSI is one of 133 institutions in the RM network and won first place in the social media campaign competition. This wins gives UR CTSI more resources to get researchers and study volunteers registered with RM.

The Learning Healthcare System: Clinical Care and Research Working Hand in Hand

The acting chief Research and Development Officer in the U.S. Department of Veteran Affairs, David Atkins, will discuss learning healthcare systems at CTSI Grand Rounds on December 13. The Institute of Medicine developed the learning healthcare system concept, describing it as a cycle of patient care providing information that generates research studies, which get applied to clinical care, which provides new information and generates new studies.

Telling the Stories behind Suicide

CTSI Grand Rounds recently featured a discussion about suicide prevention via psychological autopsy, a method of learning from suicide deaths by examining the constellation of circumstances a person faced prior to their death. As veterans are at particularly high risk for suicide, URMC researchers have teamed up with the Canandaigua VA Medical Center to tackle this issue.

Two early stage investigators at URMC share their experiences presenting grant proposal ideas at the CTSI’s Research Methods Forum.  The Forum provides an opportunity to get feedback from a multidisciplinary group of peers, mentors, and potential collaborators to strengthen proposals.
