UR Offers New Program to Boost Diversity among Early Career Researchers

URMC Neurology resident and researcher David Paul, MD, leans over a participant completing a task for his clinical studyThe University of Rochester has launched a new program meant to boost the diversity of its early-career research faculty. The two-day UR Stars Program will help connect established researchers at the University with underrepresented postdoctoral fellows and early-career faculty candidates from around the country.

Having a diverse workforce can boost productivity and improve outcomes, but several racial/ethnic groups, individuals from disadvantaged backgrounds, and people with disabilities remain underrepresented in the biomedical research workforce across the U.S. Increasing diversity in this sector can bring new viewpoints and ideas to the table, fostering collaboration, creativity, and innovation.

UR Stars will help basic science, population health, and biomedical research faculty recruit underrepresented postdoctoral fellows and early career faculty into open positions in their labs. Interested faculty from the UR School of Medicine and Dentistry, UR School of Nursing and Eastman Institute of Oral Health can give a speed research talk and network with the candidates at the program’s inaugural event in November.

The event, taking place Sunday, November 11 through Tuesday, November 13, will offer scholars from diverse backgrounds and especially those who are underrepresented in biomedical research the opportunity to engage with University faculty, and explore the University and Rochester. Participating scholars will be strongly encouraged to apply for post-doctoral fellowships at the UR.

This program is supported by the Office of Faculty Development and Diversity at UR, and URMC’s Clinical and Translational Science Institute, and Graduate Education and Postdoctoral Affairs.
