Frequently Asked Questions

Are specialty contact lenses comfortable?

Yes. Most patients find them very comfortable once adapted. Scleral lenses, in particular, are often more comfortable than soft lenses for patients with dry eye or irregular corneas.

How long does a specialty contact lens fitting take?

The fitting process usually requires:

  • A comprehensive consultation including advanced measurements or imaging

  • A fitting appointment in which device care and handling is covered

  • One or more follow-up visits

The entire process may take several weeks to achieve the best fit and vision.

How long do specialty contact lenses last?

This is dependent upon lens type. Your eye doctor will recommend a replacement schedule based on your lens type and eye health.

Are specialty contact lenses expensive?

Specialty lenses cost more than standard contacts because they are custom-made and require advanced fitting. Some medical eye conditions may qualify for insurance coverage, but coverage varies depending upon condition and carrier.

Does insurance cover specialty contact lenses?

Some insurance plans cover specialty contact lenses. Vision plans may offer partial benefits. Our office can help verify your coverage during a consultation visit.

Are specialty contact lenses hard to put in and take out?

They can feel different at first, but patients receive personalized training. Most people become confident with insertion and removal after a short learning period.

How do I care for specialty contact lenses?

Care depends on the lens type but typically includes:

  • Daily cleaning and disinfection

  • Proper storage solutions

  • Avoiding tap water exposure

  • Regular lens replacement

Your provider will give you detailed instructions.

Can I wear specialty contact lenses all day?

Most patients can wear them 10–14 hours per day, depending on eye health and lens type. Your doctor will advise what’s best for you.

Are specialty contact lenses safe?

Yes, when properly fitted and cared for, they are very safe and can significantly improve vision, comfort, and eye health.

What happens if my vision changes?

Specialty lenses can be adjusted or redesigned if your prescription or eye shape changes. Regular follow-up visits are important.
