Michael Brady, PhD, named Interim Associate Director for Administration for Wilmot Cancer Institute
Wilmot Cancer Institute has named Michael Brady, PhD, as interim Associate Director for Administration, where he will provide administrative leadership for Wilmot's research enterprise and oversee administration of its National Cancer Institute (NCI) Cancer Center Support Grant (CCSG). In this role, Brady will work closely with Wilmot Director Jonathan Friedberg, MD, MMSc, and the cancer center's executive leadership team to advance strategic priorities, strengthen research infrastructure and foster collaboration across Wilmot's research programs.
As associate director, Brady will oversee key administrative functions supporting Wilmot's research mission, including finance, research administration, faculty recruitment and development, shared resources and internal research funding programs. He will help implement Wilmot's strategic plan, monitor institutional and research performance, identify opportunities for growth and collaboration, and ensure programs remain aligned with NCI expectations and Wilmot's strategic priorities.
Brady also will lead the planning, development and ongoing administration of Wilmot's CCSG, including renewal and annual reporting activities, while overseeing the data, compliance and programmatic infrastructure that supports the grant. He will work closely with scientific and clinical leaders to use research and performance data to strengthen programs, advance innovative cancer research and support Wilmot's continued growth.
"Mike brings a deep understanding of Wilmot's research enterprise, as well as extensive experience in laboratory-based research, clinical research, and grants management, to this new role," said Friedberg. "He played an instrumental role in our journey to NCI designation, supporting that effort from the earliest planning stages through the preparation and submission of our successful CCSG application. I am confident that his experience, knowledge and collaborative approach will continue to move Wilmot forward."
Brady has been part of Wilmot since 2010, serving as a postdoctoral fellow, health project coordinator, staff scientist and, most recently, program manager for the administration team, a role he has held since 2017. He earned his PhD from the Roswell Park Division at the University at Buffalo and completed his postdoctoral fellowship at Wilmot Cancer Institute.
Brady's appointment marks a new chapter in Wilmot's administrative leadership following the transition of Brian Martin, MPA, to the newly created Office of Clinical Innovation and Strategy (OCIS). Martin, who has served as Wilmot's associate director for administration and finance while also serving as Interim URMFG chief operating officer, will become chief administrative officer for OCIS under Chief Clinical Officer Richard Schulick, MD, MBA. In this role, he will lead strategic initiatives and oversee budgeting for University of Rochester Medicine while continuing to provide oversight of Wilmot's clinical functions.
"Brian's steady leadership, institutional knowledge and commitment to our faculty and staff have helped shape the cancer center we are today," said Friedberg. "I am particularly grateful for Brian's partnership and leadership throughout our journey to NCI designation. His loyalty, determination and deep belief in Wilmot have made a profound impact on me personally and on our cancer center as a whole. I am grateful that we will continue to benefit from his expertise and partnership as he takes on this important new role."
