Tap into Efficiency: Imprivata Transforms Workflows Across UR Medicine
Imagine starting your shift by entering your credentials just once, then seamlessly accessing workstations and clinical applications throughout the day.
That's the power of Imprivata's SSO (single sign on) technology, which eliminates the frustration of repeatedly typing usernames and passwords dozens of times per shift and provides instant, secure access to the systems our clinicians need.
Getting to Know Imprivata
Designed to streamline daily workflows, enhance security, and provide more time to focus on patients – especially in high-traffic clinical environments – deployment of Imprivata is already making a much-appreciated impact for clinical staff across UR Medicine.
“Deployment of this game-changing technology is at the half-way mark of our multi-year strategic rollout across the UR Medicine patient care network,” says Jim Forrester, Chief Technology Officer for University of Rochester Medicine. “We are carefully collaborating with service line and department leaders to focus on clinical workflows and staff experience at each location.”
“Imprivata represents a much-appreciated advancement in clinical workflow technology,” says Gregg Nicandri, MD, Chief Digital & Innovation Officer for University of Rochester Medicine. “By eliminating repetitive authentication steps, our providers can reclaim vital time throughout the day, leading to meaningful improvements in patient-provider introductions and setting the tone for more person-centered interactions.”
Impressive Results
More than 18,000 faculty and staff now use Imprivata to log on in an average week. Even more impressive, close to 13,000 of our clinicians now tap into Imprivata’s efficiencies each day.
Based on a conservative calculation of 5 seconds saved per credential entry, approximately 140 hours per day are saved from logons, which is approximately 980 hours a week.
“The Office of Wellbeing salutes the hard work of Jim, Gregg, and the many other people responsible for bringing Imprivata to life across URMC,” said Craig Rooney, PhD, Chief Wellbeing Officer, “Solutions like this that reduce irritants and connect clinicians and their teams to more meaningful work can yield real reductions in burnout and increases in professional satisfaction.”
A Personal Experience
For Karilyn Piwoni-Lippa, OD, an optometrist at Flaum Eye Institute in Webster, Imprivata has become an integral part of her daily practice. With 30 years of optometry experience and an average of 24 patients per day, she understands the value of efficiency in high-volume clinical settings. “For complex visits, it often means that I may be in and out of a patient's chart several times, especially if extra testing is required,” she explains. “Being able to 'tap in and out' of a patient's chart has been exceptionally helpful to me, limiting the number of times I may have to retype my password to get in because I am in a hurry!”
Imprivata’s technology has eliminated a common frustration many clinicians experience. “I can't tell you the number of times I had to try to log in ad nauseam because I was typing too fast and making errors,” Piwoni-Lippa says.
Beyond the time savings, she emphasizes the patient-experience benefits: “Being able to walk into a room, make eye contact, and introduce myself while simultaneously tapping in helps patients feel more instantly welcomed versus having them stare at your back or side while you try to laboriously log in!”
The benefits extend beyond just physicians. “From a workflow optimization perspective, Imprivata is delivering measurable efficiency gains across our nursing and clinical services teams,” notes Forrester. “We're seeing nurses save cumulative minutes throughout their shifts—time that directly translates to enhanced patient engagement and reduced documentation stress. When nurses aren't repeatedly typing credentials dozens of times per shift, we see reduced micro-stressors and improved job satisfaction—that's a win for both our staff and our patients.”
The Benefits: More Than Just Convenience
“Time, security, and ease of use are among the most important considerations in evaluating healthcare technology,” Forrester notes. “In high-volume, complex care settings, easing the burden of multiple manual password entries reduces the frustration of occasional typos, and preserves valuable time while seeing patients. Five seconds saved may not seem like much, but when you're saving those seconds dozens of times throughout the day, the benefits transform the healthcare experience in a small but powerful way.”
